Description
Time seems to slow down when I am at my barn with my senior horse or in the studio
painting. It is in these moments that I can recognize the nuances present in both situations
and appreciate my engagement with them. When at the barn one of the things that I take
pleasure in are the daily walks with my horse by the creek side, which is lined with lush
native greenery dotted with colorful blooms. In the studio, I am engrossed in the routine of
laying out and mixing piles of color to be applied in the corresponding spots within the
painting that I am working on at the time. Both locations are reliant upon routine, and both
influence each other. This body of work focuses on where the two converge. My experience
of caring for my horse as he ages translates into the subject matter of my paintings. From
them, hopefully viewers will gain an appreciation for the difficulties and joys of growing old
as a horse and for the rewards we can reap from caring for another sentient being.
